Donations needed for the Alum Creek Dog Park Pet Food Donation Drive to help seniors feed their pets. Pet ownership provides enormous health and emotional benefits for seniors, including less depression, loneliness or isolation. The presence of a pet is the strongest social predictor of survival and pet ownership is especially important in increasing interest in life – pets can give the elderly something to care for, as well as provide an opportunity for exercise and socialization. Unfortunately, many seniors struggle to feed their beloved pets because nearly 9.2 million American seniors are in poverty. Studies have shown that seniors who can't afford pet food are more likely to share their own limited food supply with their pets.

The Alum Creek Dog Park Holiday Pet Food Drive collects donations for SourcePoint Meals on Wheels of Delaware County and Hospets of Union County. The pet food drive is in its 16th year and has become an annual holiday tradition for many. Families include their children in this act of kindness by taking the children to the store and letting them select pet food or treats to be donated. They then bring the children along to the dog park to drop off the donations. Little kids love helping to put “their” donation into the Meals on Wheels van. Families have also bought items to donate in lieu of gifts for their own family members.  Individuals have even organized donation drives in their neighborhood or workplace. A favorite recollection from pet food drive volunteers was the year a young man collected $20 from each person in his cross fit class and bought 2 dozen bags of dog food.  Such amazing acts of kindness!!
